Master the Korean arts

kuksoolwon.jpgA class teaching Korean martial arts is to launch at the youth club in Elm Road, Claygate, on Tuesday September 9, 7.30pm.

Those who go along to the inaugural Kuk Sool Won Black Belt Academy class can watch demonstrations of techniques and join in a free introductory session.

The event is open to all ages and abilities and the academy is enrolling. Organisers hope to capitalise on renewed interest in the sport following the 2008 Olympic Games.

ACS Cobham International School in Portsmouth Road has been named as one of the country's top independent schools.

The Independent newspaper published its top A-level league table for independent schools last on Saturday August 23, and the school featured in the top 30 for this year's A-levels.

Students at the school got an average of 466 UCAS points per student, which is an equivalent to nearly four A-levels.

Panel meetings in your area

The next Cobham police panel meeting will take place on Wednesday September 3 for residents to discuss concerns with officers.

The meeting will take place at 7pm at the British Legion in Downside Bridge Road, and will hosted by PC Lee Fabry, PCSO Eugene Terblanche, and PCSO Sandra Treadgold.

The next panel meeting for Stoke D'Abernon will take place the following day (4) in Station Road, Stoke D'Abernon

Kids smoke drugs in street

joseph-locke-way-1-21.jpgA mum says her life is blighted by teenagers boozing and smoking drugs outside her home on an Esher housing estate.

The single mother of three, of Joseph Locke Way, says she is afraid of leaving her home at night and has felt intimidated by groups of youngsters since she moved in three months ago.

richmondpark.jpgThe Esher and Molesey Garden Society is starting its Autumn series of lectures on Monday September 1 with a talk on Richmond Park.

Other talks will occur in October on November on flower pruning and conservation history.

Admissions to the talks cost £1 for non-members in St Nicholas Church Hall, in Summer Road, Thames Ditton.

Students at Hinchley Wood School in Claygate Lane, Esher, show another impressive set of GCSE grades this year with 78% attaining five or more A* to C.


The pass rate for students at Esher CofE High School in More Lane, Esher, rose for the fifth year in a row from 61% to 64%.

Notre Dame girls school in Convent Lane, Cobham, continued to celebrate great exam results with the publication of it's GCSE's. Almost 90% of all GCSE subject grades were A*, A or B.

Outstanding results were achieved by a number of girls, 17 of whom gained A* or A grades in nine or more subjects.

Head Bridget Williams said: "We are delighted with these results, they are clear evidence that the girls have achieved beyond expectation and tremendous value has been added, all made possible through the hard work and concentrated study of the girls, inspired teaching of the dedicated staff and the continued loyal support of our parents."

Beat bobby up for national award

PC-Lee-Fabry.jpgCobham and Oxshott neighbourhood specialist officer, PC Lee Fabry (pictured), has been nominated for a national police award.

He has been nominated for 'Neighbourhood Police Officer of the Year' at the Jane Police Review Gala Awards.

The awards aim to recognise and reward excellence in community policing across the UK and PC Fabry will represent Surrey Police, which he joined Surrey Police in September 2003.

Switch on to Radio Cobham

With local news, views, interviews, musicians and sport, all based around great popular music, Brooklands FM claims to offer the truly local radio service for Addlestone, Byfleet, Chertsey, Cobham, Shepperton, Walton, West Byfleet, Weybridge and surrounding towns that the bigger regional stations can't give. The station supports the Sam Beare Hospice, in Weybridge.
